"Hacks" star Mark Indelicato talked about how he brought his first-hand knowledge to a scene in "Hacks" where his character, Damien, explains the difference between LA and Las Vegas gays. He also discussed the ways in which "Hacks" reminds him of "Ugly Betty."
Talking with Anthony Allen Ramos for GLAAD, Indelicato discussed the moment, which was part of the most recent episode of the sitcom. What starts as an awkward dinner with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) morphs into a bonding moment for Damien and Deborah, GLAAD noted, when Damien "takes Deborah... on a trip to LA's famous West Hollywood for a night of gay bars and fun."
As part of the scene, Damien waxes knowledgeable about the differences between the gay subcultures of WeHo and Las Vegas.
"I live in West Hollywood myself, and lived in New York City for 13 years," Indelicato told Ramos, "and the communities are very, very disparate.... There are obviously some innate similarities, but they are quite different."
That's not such a surprise, the actor went on to add, since the queer community, like any other, "is not a monolith."
"I was talking to my fiancé about this the other day," Indelicato explained, "where when someone that means well is like, 'Oh, I have a gay friend, you should meet them!'" But that, the actor added, "doesn't mean that we're gonna get along just because of our queerness."
The "With Love" alum looked back at his "Ugly Betty" days to draw a comparison between that show, which ran on ABC from 2006 to 2010, and "Hacks," which is now in its fourth season.
The HBO sitcom, Indelicato said, is "the closest to 'Ugly Betty' that I've ever felt, the sense of community, the sense of everyone wanting each other to genuinely win and get the joke, get the laugh, everyone wants each other to succeed on this show."
Praising the "Hacks" team, he went on say, "From the ground up, from top to bottom, not just the cast, the crew loves this show, the writers love this show."
"I think that audiences respond to the show so well because of that," Indelicato said. "It's very palpable to feel how much love goes into making the show and how much we all genuinely like making it."
GLAAD noted that Indelicato "spoke about how nice it's been to get to work with so many talented queer actors on 'Hacks' like Johnny Sibilly, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Megan Stalter, and Hannah Einbinder."
"This was the first time as an adult that I was on a show with so many queer people, that I was also out and proud about it," Indelicato said in comments made at the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. "I think that 'Ugly Betty' was a little bit more of a tumultuous experience because I was so young."
It's still a good experience to this day. "It's incredible," Indelicato said, "we just really genuinely support each other, and we're all genuinely friends."
