Out High School Athlete Targeted By Westboro Baptist Church Celebrates Prom with Boyfriend

Sunday Apr 22, 2018

The high school athlete from Missouri who made headlines earlier this year when the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church protested his school has moved on to happier times, celebrating prom with his boyfriend.

In a new piece from Outsports, John Burroughs School football star Jake Bain, 19, and his boyfriend Hunter Sigmund, a swimmer and water polo player, recently celebrated prom.

"Prom this year was amazing," Sigmund, 18, told the website. "It was my fourth school dance with Jake and I couldn't have imagined a better way to spend our last high school dance."

Bain, who is the school's football captain, added that this was "the second year he and I have gone" to a school dance together and that they're the only gay couple at the school. They also attended their homecoming dance the last two years.

"We have been the only openly gay couple at Burroughs since I've been here, but it isn't a problem at all at our school," This text will be the linkBain told Outsports. "People treat us the same. It is nice to be able to go to prom with whoever you want and not have to worry about what other people might think."

After high school, the couple will attend different colleges, with Sigmund going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Bain attending Indiana State, where he'll play football.

Bain made headlines after coming out as gay, drawing the ire of the Westboro Baptist Church, known for their "God hates gays" slogan. The group protested the high school in March but a larger counter-protest, which included students from John Burroughs School, drowned out the members of the WBC.
