A Madea Family Funeral

Madea and her family were first introduced to a wider audience in a Tyler Perry stage production. Twenty years later, she's filmed her last scene in her final movie and has trod the boards in her ultimate stage appearance.

Mabel "Madea" Simmons, as embodied by Tyler Perry, has been a star of the stage, the small screen, and the silver screen. "Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral" is now available in a combination release that will complete the canon for people who are long-time collectors, and maybe ignite interest in folks who have never heard of Madea at all. The release has several hilarious extras for fans and a quick retrospective.

Madea is the person many Black women wish they could be when a day's gone terrible and there are no immediate solutions. She's both violent and loving: The person one becomes when wronged. She isn't a woman who waits to speak her mind, or waits for someone to help her deal with a problem even if her version of dealing has traditionally been the destruction of private property. Her ethos is to get revenge if she can.

Madea has been to jail, she's been to family cookouts, she's been in traffic stops and screamed at by white cops. Tyler Perry's work with Madea has focused on women in a way that can be problematically preachy, but also has given female creatives a platform and a voice and allowed Black women to feel seen and understood. His studio has nurtured many careers and perhaps they will continue to explore the stories of Madea's relatives if not her own stories.

"A Madea Family Funeral" moves quickly through setting the scene and introducing the main action. New actors meld with the standard support ensemble, which includes up to three characters played by Tyler Perry. Madea and her family are not great at keeping family secrets even at the best of times. Running gags, wordplay, and the occasional slapstick pratfall spice up a somber plotline that doesn't feel like the end of the road for this family.
